Diet
On this date in 1947, President Truman kicked up a firestorm of
controversy over a silly issue.
There was still starvation in some european nations occuring as result of
the recently concluded World War.
In an, albeit simple-minded, attempt to symbolize country-wide sacrifice, Truman
suggested that the nation voluntarily follow a plan of meatless Tuesdays and eggless
Thursdays.
It was immature and inneffectual; but yet quickly became more and more complicated
without having any value. Schemes for not eating beef on certain days were proposed.
Should stale bread and rotten vegetables be recycled?
The entire plan was quickly tossed away. |
